Welcome to Wat Sri Intra Atula

Thai Buddhist Centre

Copthorne Surrey

Luang Poo Thong In will be in residence at Wat Sri Intra Atula

Luang Poo Thong In is currently in residence at the temple until the 1st July. Owing to his recent very hectic schedule, advancing years and the need to rest, Luang Poo is not accepting invitations for outside visits.

Please take this opportunity to come and pay respects to Luang Poo whilst he is with us, here in the UK

Luang Ta Sommai is also in residence until the 1st July and Luang Paw Mana is here and will stay with us through the Rains Retreat

This is a great opportunity to come and meet and listen to some of our most senior monks whilst they are in the UK

About Wat Sri Intra Atula

Here our Monks practice Theravada Buddhism in the Thai Forest Tradition. You can read more about the Thai Forest Tradition of Buddhism further on in our site.

We welcome everyone to come and visit us and see what we do and how we practice. You don’t have to be Buddhist and our ambition is not to convert you. We are happy to see visitors and talk about what we do, our values and principles and particularly the importance of meditation.

Our centre is based in an old country house in the Surrey countryside but very easily accessible from the M23 motorway. We are about 10 minutes from Gatwick Airport.

The daily routine is very consistent and starts at 9am with Morning Chanting. This is followed by a short session of group meditation and then some closing blessings from the Monks. After Chanting the visitors will offer food to the monks for their morning, and only, meal of the day. Once the Monks have taken their food then the lay-people will sit and eat together, a lovely opportunity to make friends and share experiences.

At about 5pm each day, the Monks will Chant and Meditate again, after which they retire for the evening to their personal work, prayer and meditation.

During the day both the Monks and volunteers engage in everything from gardening, maintenance, meeting visitors and dealing with the day to day.

In this hectic, capitalist, ‘me’ driven culture that we live in, it is difficult to describe here the oasis of peace and contentment that this and many other Buddhist Centres can provide. The only way to know is to come for yourself and experience first hand.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
